New Pressures Over U.S. Plan For Iraqi Rule
Article Abstract:
Iraq's Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has directed his supporters who are backing his demand for direct elections to suspend demonstrations until the UN has an opportunity to determine if elections are feasible now. The developing resistance to a US plan for an American-appointed government is placing increasing pressure on the coalition goal to select designated Iraqi leaders to form a new government. American administrator L. Paul Bremer continues to insist there is not enough time to organize direct, full-fledged national elections by June 30.
