Firestone recall shifts into higher gear

Bridgestone/Firestone Inc announced that it will accelerate its recall program for the P235/75R-15 Wilderness, ATX, ATX II tires. The NHTSA reported that the tires were involved in 62 deaths and up to 100 injuries due to accidents. The company will initially replace Firestone tires in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas and gradually to the rest of the US by next summer. Firestone stores and Ford dealers will replace the tires for free.

Ford chief hints automaker may drop Firestone

Ford Motor CEO Jacques Nasser said the automaker has started talks with other tiremakers but has not ruled out the possibility that it may still use Firestone tires for its Explorers. Nasser added that Ford is not hesitant on dropping Firestone but consumers will ultimately decide on the matter. He admitted that finding a new tire supplier would be a difficult logistical problem for Ford but they will abide by what consumers want.
