Danger of miscarriage found for chip workers
Article Abstract:
A study financed by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and conducted by the University of California School of Medicine at Davis found that women exposed to chemicals during chip manufacturing have a 40 percent higher incidence of miscarriages and a 30 percent lower pregnancy rate than other women in the industry. Approximately 35,000 of the industry's 225,000 employees work in rooms where the chemicals are used; 70 percent of these are women. The Semiconductor industry association will introduce technology to minimize health risks and will encourage members to eliminate the use of glycol ethers quickly. Member companies are informing employees about health risks. Companies such as IBM and Intel Corp are placing pregnant workers in new assignments outside chip manufacturing rooms, and their most advanced factories are already using safer chemicals.

Intel rival is set back by ruling; Advanced Micro cannot copy codes
Article Abstract:
A federal judge rules that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc does not have the right to copy the microcode software in Intel Corp's 80486 microprocessor. AMD officials had been planning a Dec 1992 rollout of their version of the 486 chip, but now estimate a seven-month delay as the company writes its own microcode. The lost sales could run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. ayrix Corp now seems likely to be the first firm to market a 486 clone. Microcode is software embedded in a chip that controls its low-level operations. AMD has made deep inroads into Intel's 386 sales, and had expected to do the same with a 486-compatible chip. Despite the setback, AMD officials expect sales of as much as $150 million for their 486 clones in the second half of 1993.
