Death in the afternoon
Article Abstract:
A gambling dispute erupted into the third bloody massacre in two months in East Timor, this one starting in the marketplace on a Sunday afternoon, continuing through neighborhoods and ending two days later with an death toll estimated at 30. Death in Papua
Article Abstract:
A pro-independence leader in Indonesia's Papua province (formerly Irian Jaya) may have been killed by Indonesia's military, according to Rex Rumakiek, another independence leader in Sydney, Australia. The dead man's car had gone off a cliff, but the body showed signs of strangulation. Indonesia annexed the former Dutch colony in 1969, after occupying it in 1963, and there has been armed conflict over the status of the region ever since.
