Defense contractors' deal stumbles
Article Abstract:
Lockheed Martin's planned $10.7-billion acquisition of Northrop Grumman stumbled on Jul. 15, 1998, according to Kenneth Bacon, a spokesman for the Pentagon. For weeks, the Pentagon, Northrop and Lockheed held discussions concerning on means to settle disputes that the Northrop-Lockheed agreement would increase prices and stifle competition. A government suit, which was first filed in March 1998, alleged that the planned merger of Lockheed and Northrop, which are contractors of the Pentagon, would cut competition in nine key areas that include missile-warning systems and electronics.
