Packing runway rush hour
Article Abstract:
Twenty-nine percent of the 318 major airline flights in Aug 1999 were late during the busiest 15 minutes of the day, which is between 7:45 and 8:00 pm, at US airports. From Apr to Aug in 1999, flight delays increased 36% compared with the same period in 1998. Some of reasons given for these delays include weather, breakdowns in the air-traffic controll system and overschuling of flights. The latter was responsible for 20% of the delays.

Northwest skips expected post-strike fare sale
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines will skip the deep discount fare sale expected by observers since its pilot strike ended. Due to the strike, the airline incurred losses totaling $714 million, forcing the company to report a net loss of $224 million in the third quarter of 1998, against a profit of $290 million in the same year-ago period. Northwest will not proceed with the big post-strike fare sale because its domestic bookings are strong. In another development, Northwest said that it is going to dispute the objections raised by the Justice Department regarding its 10-month proposal to establish a partnership with Continental.
