Delta's marketing chief aims to please passengers
Article Abstract:
Delta Air Lines, the third largest airline in the world, has appointed Fred Reid, formerly from Lufthansa, as executive vice president in charge of marketing. Reid's entry in the airline is seen as means to improve the airline in terms of customer service. The decline in customer service is mainly blamed for the drop in earnings in the airline and Reid's assignment will be to improve the company's earnings by gaining back customer satisfaction. Customer service was affected by the company's decision in the early 1990s to reduce cost, in effect also diminishing the ranks of customer service agents.

British Airways, KLM ground merger plan
Article Abstract:
British Airways and KLM have cancelled their impending merger, which the airlines said were due to irreconcilable commercial and regulatory issues. The governments of both airlines were concerned that massive layoffs would ensue if the merger pushed through, which would have created the world's third-largest carrier. Keeping KLM an entirely Dutch firm also became an issue of national pride in Netherlands while the airline also did not want its Schipol hub to be downgraded. Likewise, BA did not want to give up landing slots at Heathrow.

Air Canada pilots join Northwest's on strike
Article Abstract:
Air Canada was hit by a pilots' strike on the eve of Labor Day in a move that follows the six-day strike by pilots at Northwest Airlines which led to the termination of 27,500 workers. Air Canada declared that 600 of its international flights were postponed, including flights to 42 cities. Flight cancellations by both Air Canada and Northwest created fewer options for holiday tourists. Both carriers also stated that they were finding it difficult to handle travellers and assign them seats on other airlines.
