Despite profit from cellphones, Vodafone reports a loss; as mobile operators like Vodafone scale back, equipment makers feel a pinch
Article Abstract:
Vodafone Group PLC has released its earnings report for the six-month period ending Sep. 30, 2001. Despite the profitability of its cellular telephone services business, charges and overvalued-asset write-downs caused the company to lose $14.1 billion or 9.7 billion pounds sterling. Last year's loss for the same period was 4.8 billion pounds sterling. Many write-downs were caused by the devaluation of telecommunication assets purchased during the boom times.
