Gannett invests in ZapMedia

Gannett Company Inc, parent company of USA Today, will invest $270 million in Atlanta, GA-based ZapMedia.com. The investment is part of Gannett's plan to become a major player in the interactive television market. ZapMedia will get $250 million for multi-media advertisements over 10 years and $19 million in cash and other revenue sharing opportunities in exchange for an Gannett equity stake in the online company.

The firm's objective in the acquisition of the newspapers is to solidify its position as the leading newspaper chain in the US. Disney puts a stop to Go.com, cuts 400 jobs

Disney has discontinued the family-oriented Go.com portal, resulting in the loss of 400 jobs and a write-off worth more than $800 million. Each share of the Disney Internet Group would also be converted to 0.19353 share of Disney, which owns 72% of the online group. Disney's most popular Web sites, Disney.com, ABCNews.com, ESPN.com and ABC.com can now be accessed directly by users rather than having to go through Go.com. Disney has also put the Infoseek search and directory service for sale.
