Fire department officials found high levels of mercury in a residential building in Vancouver, British Columbia. The fire department's hazardous waste materials unit made the discovery at an apartment building in the city following the death of a resident who experimented with the dangerous metal.

Dollar continues to lose ground

The Canadian dollar fell below its 1998 record low of 63.31 cents (U.S.) yesterday, rebounding to close at 63.35 cents (U.S.) The problem seems to be psychological; investor's fears of a worldwide recession and of the economic aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.
