Rivals join Continental in raising fares
Article Abstract:
Continental Airlines Inc has been joined by a number of its competitors in raising air fares by as much $30 roundtrip as of Feb 20, 2000. The airline, which implemented the increase on Feb 18, 2000, has been joined by such airlines as United, American, US Airways, TWA and Delta. Continental made the move as a means of coping with the high prices of jet fuel that has already reached $1 per gallon as of Jan 2000.

Airlines raise fares third time in 2000
Article Abstract:
Major airlines increased fares for the third time in 2000. Except for Southwest Airlines, the leading carriers raised domestic fares by $10 to $30 per round trip. Since the beginning of 2000, the average unrestricted fare was up 4.8%, while the average advance-purchase fare increased by 3.4%. Industry observers say the latest round of increases is due to strong travel demand, not to pricey jet fuel.

Doubt greets United-US Airways promise to cap fares
Article Abstract:
United Airlines Inc and US Airways Inc's promise to refrain from raising domestic fares for a period of two years has been met by distrusts from airfare experts. The promised freeze in airfare rates was made in anticipation of criticisms of higher fees following the completion of the proposed purchase of US Airways by United Airlines. However, airfare experts said that the promise does not cover international fares and a number of other fares such as companion, child, senior, military, promotional and Internet specials.
