Deals help to restore sizzle to biotechs
Article Abstract:
The biotechnology industry is undergoing a mini-merger trend that could benefit investors. These mergers are not as large or high-profile compared to those in the telecommunications and financial services industries that occured in 2000. US Bancorp Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Ginsberg noted that there have been eight major biotech acquisitions worth more than $100 million apiece since Jun 2000. Added to the merger deals which occurred between Jan 2000-Jun 2000, this figure may surpass the 17 deals worth $100 million or more that were announced during 1999. This is partly why biotech stocks have once again become popular since spring 2000.
