Draft debates
Article Abstract:
Some military experts are raising concerns that the US might not have enough troops to protect US interests without a draft, particularly if unrest breaks out elsewhere, since the US death toll is rising above 1,800 and recruitment numbers are sagging. However, Pentagon is adamant that it will not resort to a draft despite hiking bonuses and education benefits, lowering entry standards and creating a controversial database of high school and college students.

Draft debates: 'Politically unpalatable'
Article Abstract:
A British assessment leaked in July 2005 indicating the US is planning major troop reductions in Iraq in 2006, could dampen talk about a draft but even if US troop levels remain unchanged in Iraq, some do not foresee a reinstatement of a draft. Hence, they believe that it is politically unpalatable, and the public would probably rather accept defeat in Iraq than implement conscription.

Debating the draft
Article Abstract:
Lawmakers are asking about lagging recruitment numbers, possible overuse of the Guard and Reserves and the prospects for a return of the draft with the continual war in Iraq. Although Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has repeatedly dismissed bringing back the draft, many members of Congress are not convinced and are concerned about recruiting problems impacting troop strength.
