Dual-powered, 70-mpg hybrid on way to USA

Honda Motor Company Ltd will be the first automaker to launch Insight, a hybrid vehicle in the US market. To be launched in Dec 1999, the small coupe will be powered a 1-liter, three-cylinder, 73-horsepower gasoline engine and an electric motor. The hybrid vehicle is also capable of driving 70 miles on a gallon of gas. Toyota also expects to introduce its Prius hybrid vehicle in the US by the middle of 2000. The four-door sedan, which has been available in Japan since 1997, also switches between a gasoline engine and electric motors.

Ford hopes Lightning strikes buyers

Ford Motor Co has unveiled its 2000 SVT Lightning at the Specialty Equipment Market Assn Show held in Las Vegas, NV. The vehicle is claimed to be the fastest factory-built pickup in the world. Lightning employs a supercharged 5.4-li, overhead-camshaft V-8 engine, with power of up to 380 horsepower and 450 pounds-ft of torque. It has 20 more hp and 10 more lbs- ft than the 2000 Lightning. It will be sold beginning Jan 2001 at $32,300.
