EMJ issues special dividend to shareholders

EMJ Data Systems Ltd. of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, is issuing a special dividend of $1.50 a share to its shareholders. The move, which will cost the firm around CS11 million, comes after the computer products distributor posted a profit of C$1.6 million or 22 cents per share in its third quarters that ended Apr. 30, 1998. EMJ President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Estill, which owns 50% of the firm, will receive C$5.5 million because of the move. EMJ will pay the onetime dividend on Jul. 22, 1998 to shareholders of record on Jul. 2, 1998.

ATI stock falls on worries of heated competition

The stock of computer graphics equipment maker ATI Technologies Inc of Markham, Ontario, is being offloaded by investors as news that the compay is facing more intense competition which would negatively affect its long- term prospects. Among these are Intel's push into the low-end of the graphics market and news that 3dfx Interactive had won a contract form Compaq Computer Corp. The company's stock has declined by 20% since Aug 31, 1999, when it announced the loss of a contract with Dell Computer Corp.
