EchoStar may vie for DirecTV
Article Abstract:
EchoStar Communications CEO Charlie Ergen is preparing to make his bid for DirecTV as News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch intensifies talks with Hughes Electronics for control of the direct broadcast satellite television services company. Ergen is expected to act much the way he did in 1998 when he fought Murdoch's attempt to buy a cable-controlled satellite company that DirecTV eventually bought. Ergen's prospects for combining with DirecTV dimmed on May 1, 2001, when Hughes and GM agreed to pursue a deal with Murdoch.

EchoStar chief near DirecTV bid
Article Abstract:
EchoStar Communicatins Corp's CEO Charlie Ergen in May 2001 stressed his intention to acquire DIRECTV Inc by unveiling a bond sale that would increase his company's funding by $1 billion. Announced on May 22, EchoStar's debt offering will add to the $1.3 billion it already possesses.
