The birth of the tourism industry and factors boosting its growth are discussed. Some of the main reasons behind the rise of the industry such as the rise in wealth which paved way for the European and British aristocrats and wealthy Americans to travel around the continents to exotic locations and places of natural and cultural importance for pleasure, the development of the transport industry, and the US government's efforts to preserve places of natural beauty and reserving places for public use, resort and recreation are discussed.

The concerns related to ecotourism threatening the weak ecosystems, ecotourism as a practical solution to the conventional development and whether ecotourism should be certified are discussed.
