Ending poverty

Irish rocker Bono and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are leading a new, intensified effort to reduce global poverty. The world's leading industrial nations have pledged to increase anti-poverty aid by $50 billion by 2010, with half going to Africa, but numerous barriers stand in the way, including armed conflict, rampant HIV/AIDS, widespread illiteracy, drought, malaria, government corruption and the lack of basic infrastructure like clean water and schools.

Action plan

The World Bank was assigned to draw up an action plan for Africa after the G-8 meeting that would outline measurable results that could be expected from the massive infusion of aid. The plan was expected to be ready in time for the U.N.'s Millennium review Summit in New York in early September 2005.
