Explorer safety probe unlikely without proof of defect
Article Abstract:
Bridgestone/Firestone's efforts to shift the blame for rollover crashes to the Ford Explorer seem unlikely to result in a federal investigation of the sport-utility vehicle without proof of a specific defect. Bridgestone/Firestone is trying to prove that the Explorer has a defect that causes it to roll over more often than other vehicles. The tiremaker is doing tests on the vehicle that it believes will show a defect in its steering or suspension systems.
