Internet assets muddle MCI-Sprint deal
Article Abstract:
MCI WorldCom's $115-billion acquisition of Sprint Corp is facing opposition from regulators because of the companies' Internet holdings. The firms, the No. 2 and No. 3 long-distance operators in the US, also controls 50% and 18% of the world's Internet traffic. Critics of the proposed deal are saying that control by a single company over such a huge portion of the Internet would be anti-competitive.

AT&T may have to give up Liberty to get MediaOne
Article Abstract:
AT&T may be forced to sell Liberty Media once its $60-billion acquisition of MediaOne gets regulatory approval. Selling Liberty Media would allow MediaOne to retain its 25% stake in Time Warner Entertainment. The combined market share of AT&T, MediaOne and Time Warner would exceed the FCC's 30% limit. The cap is aimed at preventing one or two companies from dominating any market. The FCC is reportedly not receptive to AT&T's suggestion to sell small pieces of its cable system since it would still own three of the top four systems.
