F.T.C. review of AOL deal in final stage; Time Warner merger remains uncertain
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission remains at odds with America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc. over the details of the companies' planned merger, though the three entities have been negotiating for months in the FTC and Federal Communications Commission's antitrust review. Several executives of Internet companies have testified to the devastating impact of the merger on competition and have suggested that the government set strong competition policies for the merger. The FTC continues its preparation of a court order blocking the merger because of the uncertain outcome of the negotiations.

Time Warner makes access deal with Earthlink
Article Abstract:
In hopes of securing government approval for its planned merger with America Online, Time Warner announced it will let Earthlink offer high-speed Internet access via Time Warner cable TV, if the merger wins approval. The pact would let Earthlink offer some forms of interactive television. Rival Disney sees this as a positive move, having been concerned that AOL Time Warner could prevent Disney from offering interactive services connected to its ESPN and ABC networks.
