Surprise hurts Oracle Systems
Article Abstract:
Oracle Systems Corp will post earnings per share of 18 cents for its quarter ended Feb 28, 1990 on earnings of $24.3 million. Six days before announcing the earnings, Oracle told financial analysts that earnings per share would be between 23 and 25 cents per share. Wall Street responded to the news of the actual earnings by dumping a record number of shares in the company, resulting in a drop of $7.875 per share to $17.50 on Mar 29, 1990. Oracle attributes the lower earnings to $15 million in sales disallowed by auditors on Mar 23. Because software contracts at Oracle are sold on a trial basis, there is some question about when a sale can be counted. Oracle says the confusion has been resolved, and this will be the only quarter affected. Analysts are beginning to question the quality of Oracle's management: there has been an increase in accounts receivable and rumors of quality control problems.
