FTC to debate deal on generic form of Prozac
Article Abstract:
FTC members are expected to approve a staff recommendation which would oppose a deal proposed by Eli Lilly which would prevent generic competition from its antidepressant drug Prozac for another 10 years. The deal calls for Eli Lilly to pay $90 million to Sepracor to license a purified version of Eli Lilly's Prozac. While a number of Prozac's patents are set to expire soon, newer formulations and versions could extend the drug's patent to 2004. The deal with Sepracor could enable Eli Lilly to extend Prozac's patent until 2014.

Credit card firms face Justice suit
Article Abstract:
Visa USA and MasterCard International will face antitrust lawsuits regarding their policies of not allowing banks that offer their cards from offering other credit cards, such as American Express. The action is a result of an investigation conducted by Justice officials in 1996 in response to the complaint of American Express who said such policy had been reversed in all other countries in which it does business, except in Canada, where it is currently under review. Kelly Presta of Visa said that the company stands by the policy for the consumers' interest and that there is already a strong competition between Visa and MasterCard.
