Conrad Black's firm Hollinger Inc increased its stake in Southam Inc on May 24, 1996, from 19.5% to 41%. Southam is the publisher of 20 Canadian daily newspapers. The acquisition makes Hollinger the third largest newspaper chain in the world and the top one in Canada.
