Chretien has never been a very good behind-the-scenes networker, but now he is actively trying to develop those skills so that he can influence the unity issue. Chretien has done a good job of reaching out to those with similar views, but needs to also network with those with opposing views.

The Liberals' best hope
Article Abstract:
Jean Chretien's Liberal Party will have a hard time convincing Canadian voters that their lives are better since Chretien won the Oct 1993 election. Instead, the Liberals will probably try to portray the opposition parties as divisive and extremist, and Liberals as mainstream.

Both current Premier Jean Chretien and former Premier William Lyon Mackenzie King advocate a defensive style of government that relies more on preventing harm rather than championing any grand plans. The only agenda Chretien is committed to is balancing the budget.
