Health drugs could raise premiums
Article Abstract:
Sales of cholesterol-lowering drugs and health insurance premius in the US are expected to increase following the release on May May 15, 2001 of new health guidelines from the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). The NCEP report that recommends increased screening and treatment shows how drugs are becoming increasingly used to fight diseases. Under the new NCEP guidelines, sales of such drugs could more than double because the number of US patients needing medication could increase from 16 million-36 million.

Drug firms advise public not to worry about drug shortages, however hemophiliacs and their families often have only a day's supply of the drug that keeps them from bleeding to death. Snake-bite anti-venom is another drug in short supply.

Counterfeiters have successfully slipped fake, mislabeled and mishandled drugs into Unites States pharmacies, as more high-priced prescription medications hit the market in 2003. Pharmacists stated that the problem of counterfeit, mislabeling or mishandled drugs could spread beyond the relatively new medications affected unless state and federal regulators tighten requirements for the nation's drug wholesalers.
