Mixed views on NEC computer; speed is acknowledged, but some experts say flexibility is lacking
Article Abstract:
A leading American computer expert, Jack J. Dongarra, says that the performance of the NEC Corp SX-3 supercomputer far surpasses the performance of its nearest Japanese and American competitors for speeds attained by a single processor system. Dongarra, a scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, tracks supercomputer performance based on a series of commonly used mathematical operations. Other experts are skeptical about the SX-3, noting that the Japanese lack a capability to harness processors in parallel. According to Cray Research officials, NEC machines are designed to perform well on artificial tests, and test results do not necessarily reflect real world circumstances.
