Canadian Airlines is in danger of filing bankruptcy unless the Canadian government provides financing to help close a deal with American Airlines. Workers for Air Canada oppose the financing because of the potential effects a merger between Canadian and American Airline will have on its business.

PWA Corp, the parent company of Canadian Airlines International Ltd, worked out a deal that would allow AMR Corp to buy a 25% stake in Canadian for $246 million. In return for wage concessions, employees would own another 25%. Canadian rejected an earlier offer made by Air Canada.
