For G.I.'s, Pride in War Efforts But Doubts About Iraq's Future
Article Abstract:
US soldiers believe in the importance of their military mission in Iraq, but they feel that an American presence will be required for at least three years. They are frustrated by the Iraqis' lack of faith in their efforts to retore safety and stability because basic infrastructure is still lacking in many places. They do see changes that are positive. Iraqis are more willing to talk since the capture of Saddam Hussein, but they seem to be unwilling to assume more responsibilities for ending local criminal activities or cleaning up towns with post-war filth. Unemployment remains at 50% in Iraq and creates resentment towards the US.
