Big-business power in affordable small-business servers; Compaq and Dell, snarling Texas rivals, are again at each other's throats
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp and Dell Computer Corp both introduce several new high-powered, low-cost file servers in an attempt to capitalize on the projected growth in small- and medium-sized firms' demand for network-serving microcomputers. The new products are generally 80486-microprocessor-based and are designed to fill a gap between average desktop machines and superservers costing upwards of $25,000. Both companies are trying to broaden their server ranges, Compaq by supplementing its high-performance servers with lower-priced systems and Dell by adding higher-powered machines to its strong-selling line of less expensive microcomputers. Key sales points for these machines are their fast processor speed, capacious disk storage and speedy peripherals interfaces, such as the small computer systems interface (SCSI).

Air Force PC contract for Zenith; 2d round of bids won after industry dispute
Article Abstract:
The Air Force awards the disputed $740 million Desktop IV to Zenith Data Systems for the delivery of about 300,000 desktop microcomputers, software and peripherals within a three-year period. The controversial contract, reputed to be one of the biggest government contracts for microcomputers, was originally awarded to CompuAdd Corp and Sysorex Information Systems Inc in Nov 1991. That contract was cancelled following protests by losing bidders, including Zenith Data Systems, on the grounds that the federal bidding process was flawed. Zenith's winning bid involves the company's standard microcomputer without special configurations. Company officials say the contract would not affect 1992 revenues but could add $200 million to 1993 earnings.
