French Rival Said to Be Considering Aventis for Takeover

The French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Synthelabo may acquire Aventis Pharmaceuticals for approximately $60 billion, thus making it the third largest drug company after Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. Sanofi, well known for its products Ambien and Plavix, is working on its bidding strategy to avoid a hostile takeover. Aventis maintains that no discussions are underway at this time for a merger.

Sanofi Makes Its Bid for Aventis;It Is Quickly Rejected as 'Inferior'
Article Abstract:
Sanofi-Synthelabo's $60 billion bid for Aventis S.A. was rejected because it was considered an undervalued offer. The French government supports the offer despite the possibility that many layoffs will take place. The offer includes five shares of Sanofi and 69 euros for every six shares of Aventis. GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis are possible contenders but they have not yet made an offer.
