Small-town fellow reaches top of retail as Wal-Mart CEO

Lee Scott has been designated to replace David Glass as CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Scott joined Wal-Mart in 1980 when the retail giant was only selling $1.2 billion in merchandise. His ascension to the top post at Wal- Mart comes at a time when its annual sales reach $200 billion. Glass remains as the chairman of Wal-Mart's executive committee, while Rob Walton retains his post as corporate chairman.

Compaq Computer will have difficulty searching for a new CEO because of the current scarcity of executive talents in the computer industry.;According to experts, the computer industry is experiencing shortage of potential executives due to the rapid expansion of the industry and the preference of executives to stay in Internet and electronic commerce companies. Compaq, which suddenly ousted CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer on Apr 18, 1999 for unrevealed reasons, might just have to conduct its CEO search outside the industry for Pfeiffer's replacement.
