Proponents of biofuels often bemoan the fact that Australia was slow to realize the economic, environmental and national security benefits of biofuels. However, in 2006, the Australian biofuels industry is rapidly pushing into the mainstream towards stock-exchange-listed corporations, rich superannuation funds and oil majors, with new biodiesel and ethanol plants opening at a rapid pace.

The resource shares grew by 39% in 2004-05 compared with 19% percent for the All Ordinaries index and prices of steel, aluminium, zinc, iron ore and several minor metals have already fallen. A consensus view is that real commodity prices are falling for decades, but high demand and scarcity of supply has reversed the order.
