GM's new labor chief has tough road ahead

General Motor's (GM) Gary Cowger, who has been recently appointed as labor chief replacing seven-year chief negotiator Gerald Knechtel, is expected to have a difficult task of trimming GM's US workforce by some 45,000 employees while appeasing the United Auto Workers. Cowger has been recalled to the US after just four months as head of GM's Opel operations in Europe tasked to improve the productivity of the plant. Previously, Cowger expanded the car, truck and parts operations of GM in Mexico which have been considered to be among the auto maker's most efficient divisions.

GM may rush plan to trim dealers
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM) may expedite its plan to remove 2,500 dealerships by year 2000. According to GM Marketing Chief Ron Zarrella, the firm is currently weighing its options on the matter. However, GM is not rushing make any deals with Republic Industries, the parent firm of Automation used car superstores that purchased around 60 GM dealerships. Aside for not being ready into entering an agreement with Republic, GM has seen that Republic is not yet capable of managing a national dealership network.
