GM modular assembly plan yanks union's chain
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp has announced its $1-billion modular assembly plan called Project Yellowstone. The project involves the creation of a series of new small-car plants and assembly lines by early 2000. Under the plan, workers at Yellowstone facilities will snap together pre-assembled components called modules. GM said that each plant will have 2,000 workers, from the current 5,000 workers typically employed at its plants. The company is expecting to cut costs by $2000 for each small car it builds through the modular assembly method.
