GM plant on Oshawa expected to close today
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp.'s truck facility in Oshawa, Ontario, is expected to shut down on Jul. 22, 1998, as a result of prolonged strikes by 9,200 workers at two GM plants in Flint, MI, that commenced in early June 1998. The Oshawa plant had been partially shut down in Jul. 21, 1998, with most workers sent home. US District Judge Paul Gadola formally ordered GM and the United Auto Workers labor union, which represents the striking workers, into arbitration as a result of GM's claim that the lengthy strikes were illegal. Attempts to prolong or delay the arbitration may be met with comtempt of court citation and fines.
