Gemstar International Chief Executive Henry Yuen could be a major influence in the way people watch television should his company succeed in acquiring TV Guide Magazine for $8.6 billion in stock. Yuen plans to inject new technology into television, including a plan for wireless technology to supply data to televisions in the year 2000. The executive also envisions to expand that service using a two-way communication system based on 900-megahertz frequency.

Warner Bros. chiefs leave as movie tastes change

Warner Bros co-CEOs Bob Daly and Terry Semel disclosed that they would leave by end of their contracts in December. Daly and Semel have managed the motion picture and television production firm for 20 years and its music operation since 1995. Industry sources noted that the interest of audiences are moving away from the big budget films which the two co-CEO specialized in. Warner's music group has faltered due to its reliance on veteran stars.

Gemstar CEO writes chapter in e-book publishing

Gemstar-TV Guide International has introduced the Gemstar eBook, a portable electronic device that can download and store 20 to 180 novels. Users would pay the company a fee before they can download the encrypted text of novels, books and newspapers from Gemstar's servers. Among the titles that Gemstar could publish electronically include Patricia Cornwell's 'Last Precint,' Ken Follett's 'Code to Zero,' and Ed McBain's 'Candyland.'
