The government has granted patent applications in both the United States and United Kingdom covering gene-silencing technology, which shuts down specific genes in all living organisms including humans. The technology has the strength to suppress rogue genes linked to diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders and viral infections such as HIV, AIDS and hepatitis C.
