Shoppers noticed with alarm that in some stores Easter 2006 actually began during December 2005, less than 24 hours after Christmas, and a full 112 days before Easter. This is part of a retail policy to run year-round promotions linked to seasonal celebrations, a king of blanket-bombing campaign intended to make every single day a selling day.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is tracking estuarine crocodiles for the first time using satellite telemetry. Queensland's crocodile population estimated at 30,000 is thought to be shifting south as far as Burnett Heads, near Bundaberg.
