GeoCities turns freebies into billions
Article Abstract:
GeoCities has been offering interested online users the disk space and tools to establish their own Internet sites for free. The Marina del Ray, CA-based company's free service has helped over 3.5 million users create personal World Wide Web sites on a global network. Yahoo! Inc has recognized this potential of GeoCities and acquired the company in an all- stock agreement valued at $3.9 billion. GeoCities' customers, who accept advertising on their sites in exchange for the free service, are not expected to be affected by the acquisition.
