White House calls Internet security summit
Article Abstract:
Pres Bill Clinton plans to summon security experts and electronic commerce executives to a conference at the White House during the week of Feb 14, 2000-Feb 20, 2000, to explore possible ways by which electronic assaults on the Internet World Wide Web could be prevented. Clinton acknowledged that there was no one single solution to ensure Internet security, yet he also noted that the meeting was aimed at preventing vandals from shutting down Web sites while keeping an invaluable resource open. Attacks by hackers shut down Yahoo, eBay and other Web sites for several hours during the week of Feb 7, 2000-Feb 13, 2000.

Hackers, security pros call Web attacks vandalism: consultants ponder motives
Article Abstract:
Security professionals and experts consider the perpetrators of the attacks against Amazon.com, Yahoo, eBay and other popular commercial Internet World Wide Web sites as criminals rather than hackers. They say that hackers tend to be white, middle-class boys who are quite bright, mechanically proficient, curious and socially awkward, but not malicious. Attackers of the Web sites in question are being termed 'cybercriminals' who act out of greed, political motives or psychological problems.

Retail sales drop, but 'jury's out' on slowdown
Article Abstract:
Retail industry sales declined in May for the second consecutive month, increasing speculations that Federal Reserve policymakers will let interest rates remain at their present levels when they meet on June 27- 28, 2000. Economists are, however, undecided on whether consumer spending has slowed down or that the sales decline is a seasonal fluctuation. Among the goods which registered sales declines were computers, cars and appliances.
