Amtrak's hopes ride on high-speed rail line

National Railroad Passenger Corp is hoping the high-speed Acela Regional rail service will speed the company's efforts to gain financial independence. Travel time between Boston, MA, and New York, NY, will be reduced from five to four hours with the launch of the electric Acela rail service. The new service is a major part of Amtrak's business plan to wean itself from thirty years of depending on financial aid by 2003.

Amtrak plan adds 4 million miles of rail

National Railroad Passenger Corp (Amtrak) plans to add 4 million miles to its 34-million-mile rail system in the next few years and broaden its service to include the unserved markets of Des Moines, IA, Shreveport, LA, Texas and Florida. The rail company aimes to realize $65 million in added profits as it attempts to wean itself from federal government aid by 2003. Amtrak aims to increase its ridership by 26% with the addition of new services such as Silver Service, Manhattan Limited, Chicago, IL-Des Moines direct service, and Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited.

High style, high hope as Acela gets rolling
Article Abstract:
National Railroad Passenger Corp (Amtrak) introduced the Acela Express on Nov 16, 2000. The inaugural run of the train service, also known as the Great Swift Hope, was attended by celebrities that included actor Henry Winkler and former baseball star Keith Hernandez of the New York Mets. Amtrak's Acela Express, which can reach speeds of 150 mph, is able to reduce travel time to New York, NY, and Boston, MA, by 30 and 90 minutes, respectively.
