How Reith turned a leak into Labor's loss
Article Abstract:
Australian minister for unemployment, Peter Reith, converted a political liability into political gain when he responded to a leak from his party that outlined a new government policy on unemployment. The leak indicated that the government was considering influencing the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, dismantling small business awards, and altering unemployment figures. The Labor Party could not capitalize on the leak. They did not publicize the leaked document and only asked oblique questions about it at a public meeting. Reith soon released a final version of the document and praised the programs it supported.
