RJR leader in I.B.M. spotlight
Article Abstract:
Louis V. Gerstner, Jr, chairman of RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp, is emerging as the leading contender for the top post of IBM. Gerstner joined Nabisco with the mandate to overhaul the corporation after it was taken over under the biggest leverage buyout ever. Computer industry executives, such as John Sculley of Apple, John A. Young of HP and George Fisher of Motorola have taken themselves out of the race. IBM's board, by considering an industry outsider like Gerstner, is signalling what they feel IBM needs at present: business acumen rather than a technological vision. Analysts say that IBM has two alternatives: to create a new post-mainframe computing vision that will draw on the increasing popularity of software, services and microprocessor-based computers; and to break up the company into smaller units.
