The mismatch of assets and liabilities has caused problems for Australian insurer AMP, and is affecting the ratings of companies in Europe, the US and the UK because of underfunded pensions. The downturn in the stock markets has led to problems with funding pensions, both defined benefit and defined contribution, and consumers are likely to spend less and save more, with negative impact on the economy.
