Indigo goes on-line with Bookshelf.ca purchase
Article Abstract:
Indigo Books & Music Inc.'s acquisition of a majority stake in Bookshelf.ca, an Internet bookseller, paved the way for its entry into the Internet retailing business, which is estimated to have sales of over C$1 billion in 1999. The acquisition of undisclosed terms followed the action of Indigo's rival, Chapters Inc., of launching a retail Web site with The Globe and Mail. Indigo, however, said that the purchase is intended to fend off Amazon.com Inc. and to benefit from the advantages that the Canadian online company would bring.
