Indonesia was the major victim of the 1997-98 financial crisis, which slowed the growth of its economy, raised the public debt and decreased the per capita income. Indonesia's last two presidents could not do much to increase the rate of growth which remained 4 percent and only pragmatists can do the needful if it has to catch up with China.
