Inquiry by F.T.C. into Intel
Article Abstract:
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiates an investigation into Intel Corp's business practices. The purpose is to discover whether the semiconductor manufacturer is anti-competitive or engaging in violations of antitrust laws. Representatives of Intel say their company intends to cooperate with the investigation. Intel General Counsel and VP F Thomas Dunlap adds that, because of Intel's sensitive position as a key supplier of components, Intel has an aggressive program in place to make sure that the company's business practices are fair and equitable. Intel is confident, says Dunlap, that the FTC's investigation will reveal nothing negative. This is the second investigation by the FTC into business practices in the computer industry. The other investigation involves Microsoft Corp and concerns complaints about the computer software publisher's business practices in systems and applications software.

Microsoft in inquiry by F.T.C.: investigation's scope remains uncertain
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into the competitive practices of software publisher Microsoft Corp. The investigation is thought to be centered on whether Microsoft has used its dominant operating system position as publisher of MS-DOS and Windows to inhibit competition in other application software areas. Some industry observers are concerned that the company makes operating system enhancements available to its application developers earlier than to other developers. Microsoft disputes the accusation, maintaining there is a distinct differentiation between its systems group and its applications group. Industry executives hope the investigation's focus will be broadened to include Microsoft's competitive practices in general.

Investigation into software
Article Abstract:
The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigates the Open Software Foundation's (OSF's) trade practices. The OSF is a computer software consortia whose aim is to develop a version of the UNIX operating system. The OSF Unix operating system will rival that of AT&T and Sun Microsystems. OSF includes HP, IBM, and DEC. The FTC is investigating the OSF's method of requesting technology but they will not elaborate on the investigation; the OSF is unaware of any investigation. OSF was founded in 1988 as a result of computer software industry controversy over the UNIX operating system. UNIX has become a popular operating system in recent years among users who are looking for industry-wide standardization.
