Semiconductor's income rose 85% in 3d quarter
Article Abstract:
National Semiconductor Corp's third quarter earnings show profits of 19 cents a share or $26.9 million, a jump from 11 cents a share or $14.5 million in the same period of the previous year, an increase of 85 percent. The company has been profitable for six consecutive quarters due to reductions in production costs through restructuring and because of a switch to higher-priced specialized devices from commodity chips. Sales rose 22 percent at $491.5 million from the previous year's $401.8 million in the same quarter. Gross margins rose from 28.7 percent to 31.1 percent. Company officials expect similar improvements for the fourth-quarter and also point to other positive changes including customers who are now willing to commit to orders over 90 days instead of the semiconductor industry's typical 30-45-day timeframe.

Pairing chips and living cells to test drugs
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the Molecular Devices Corporation are continuing to develop the Cytocensor Microphysiometer, a sensing device that works with living cells on a silicon chip. The device will be used to help researchers understand disease, discover new drugs, and reduce the use of animals in scientific laboratories and cosmetic testing. The device monitors chemical changes in the physical processes of cells. The device does not interfere with the natural processes of cells and can accurately gauge changes using computer precision. The product is made up of biosensors that can be applied to a variety of tasks in medical research. Several companies have been using prototypes of the product during 1991. The instrument would sell for $95,000 but Molecular Devices is leasing it to provide more current updates.
