Iraqi Town Relishes Freedom, But Resentment Runs Beneath
Article Abstract:
The military battles over Kifl, Iraq presented some of the most difficult challenges for the US Aymy Third Infantry Div.'s First Brigade in Mar. 2003. Iraqi forces posed major obstacles to the campaign to secure Baghdad. A Shiite village that welcomed US liberation, Kifl has been waiting for some of the other benefits of victory. Problems with electricity and sewage are constant, and the bridge to Najaf and Karbala still awaits repair from the Mar. 25 bombing that severed traffic flow. Its hospital has no medicines to treat cholera, typhoid and meningitis. Iraqi resentment is simmering because citizens believe that US promises for a better life have been misleading.

U.S. SEES LESSON FOR INSURGENTS IN AN IRAQ BATTLE
Article Abstract:
The joint attack on US troops in Samarra may have been one of the most ambitious by Iraqi insurgents, but the US counter-attack that killed 54 should send a strong message to to Iraqi rebels, according to American officials. Iraqis say that only eight died and resentment towards US troops will increase. Civilians died in the crossfire, and the US forces are facing increasing Iraqi political support for the guerrilla warfare.
